Reception

Great start…

We have a single year group Reception class, with an intake of 15. They are taught by a teacher and full-time teaching assistant, so we can give our children the very best start to their schooling.

We like to do lots of fun activities in reception, no two days are exactly the same!

English

Children start learning to read from the very first day that they are in school. We teach children through a structured phonics programme and listen to every child read every day. Learning to write is important and we provide many opportunities for children to build their stamina with their handwriting. We currently use ‘drawing club’ which helps to develop children’s language and communication skills and helps their imagines flourish when writing stories.

Maths

In Maths, we use lots of manipulatives to develop a deep knowledge of number and explore patterns and sequences. Through a mastery approach, we learn to spot patterns and deepen our understanding on number. A key skill we focus on is subitising.

Curriculum

Every day children have the opportunity to explore many areas of the Early Years Curriculum. A large part of this learning is through play. Children learn many skills through play including communication and language, gross and fine motor skills and very importantly how to play with their peers.

Routines

We need to bring our reading books every day.

We can bring a healthy snack each day.

At Belmont, we intend our home learning to:

  • Develop reading habits and fluency that will foster a love of reading.
  • Deepen children’s understanding of key mathematical skills that will strengthen their fluency of concepts taught.
  • Provide opportunities to practise spelling patterns.
  • Provide research opportunities to consolidate and deepen understanding of topics through inspiring, creative individual learning.

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a weekly basis except for topics that are set ½ termly.  Children are to complete and submit their weekly homework by Friday each week.

See our homework policy for more details.
