Geography has always been held in high regard here at Belmont Primary School. The school’s unique location, within the context of the local area, is a celebrated and inspiring feature of the school. The Geography curriculum at Belmont Primary School draws from and makes great use of the immediate and wider local community, enabling children to quickly make links and develop an understanding of their learning.
We follow the National Curriculum and our topics are planned to run alongside themes already in place in each key stage. Our broad and balanced Geography curriculum also focuses on the local context of our unique local area, for example, children learn about how the weather and climate in Belmont is different to other surrounding areas. Children also learn to appreciate and celebrate the physical Geography of Belmont and how other schools in our local authority have contrasting locations.
In line with the National Curriculum 2014, at Belmont, the purpose of our Geography curriculum is to ensure that all pupils:
- gain knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
- increase their growing knowledge about the world to support them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.
- to gain Geographical knowledge and skills that are progressive and are sequenced to provide the framework and approaches that provide explanation of how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
- are inspired and to develop and nurture a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.
