Year One and Two

Moving into Key Stage 1…

Our Key Stage One classroom is occupied by the Year One & Two class.
During the two years in this class, the children are given an exciting and diverse curriculum making time in the infants fun and educational.

English

Reading and development of phonics skills continues to be a huge focus in Year One and Two. In English books we explore a range of books and use these to build our ideas for writing.

Maths

In Maths, we continue building on the strong foundations developed in Reception. We continue to use lots of manipulates to deepen our understanding of number and develop our knowledge of additive relationships.

Curriculum

We complement our learning with exciting and interesting lessons, from family history (The Bronte family) to looking at our local environment (exploring Belmont and Winter Hill). Children are exposed the composers such as Beethoven and artists such as Picasso; whilst developing skills in designing structures and conducting fair tests.

A big part of life in KS1 is building friendships and becoming part of our Belmont family; exploring our school values of caring, integrity, hard-working, respectful and resilience.

Routines

Reading books need to be in school every day.

We have PE on a Thursday and Friday.

Homework is given out on a Friday.

At Belmont, we intend our home learning to:

  • Develop reading habits and fluency that will foster a love of reading.
  • Deepen children’s understanding of key mathematical skills that will strengthen their fluency of concepts taught.
  • Provide opportunities to practise spelling patterns.
  • Provide research opportunities to consolidate and deepen understanding of topics through inspiring, creative individual learning.

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a weekly basis except for topics that are set ½ termly.  Children are to complete and submit their weekly homework by Friday each week.

See our homework policy for more details.
