Life in Year Five and Six
Year Five and Six is our Upper Key Stage Two class and our children’s final class at Belmont. During these years, we look to continue to build children’s independence and provide them with opportunities to grow confidence in preparation for secondary school.
English
In English, we use high quality texts from renowned authors such as Kensuke’s Kingdom (Michael Morpurgo) and Pig Heart Boy (Malorie Blackman) to develop our reading skills and stimulate our writing. Children are expected to use a range of features and punctuation to engage the reader.
Maths
In Maths, we build on previous knowledge and continue to use a CPA approach to deepen understanding. Children are encouraged to develop a greater number sense and ability to use informal methods to solve problems where appropriate. Fractions is a large part of the maths curriculum in Year Five and Six.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum in Year Five and Six, looks to build on previous knowledge and skills. Children are immersed in rich vocabulary and are expected to recall key knowledge. Art and PE are highlights of the week, where we develop our skills.
Routines
PE is on Tuesday and Friday.
Homework is given on a Friday.
At Belmont, we intend our home learning to:
- Develop reading habits and fluency that will foster a love of reading.
- Deepen children’s understanding of key mathematical skills that will strengthen their fluency of concepts taught.
- Provide opportunities to practise spelling patterns.
- Provide research opportunities to consolidate and deepen understanding of topics through inspiring, creative individual learning.
Homework will be set by the class teacher on a weekly basis except for topics that are set ½ termly. Children are to complete and submit their weekly homework by Friday each week.
