History has always been held in high regard here at Belmont Primary School. The school’s own rich history, within the context of the local area, is a celebrated and inspiring feature of the school. The History curriculum at Belmont Primary School draws from and makes great use of the immediate and wider local community, enabling children to quickly make links and develop an understanding of their learning.
We follow the National Curriculum and our topics are planned to run alongside themes already in place in each key stage. Our broad and balanced history curriculum also focuses on the local context of our unique local area, for example, children learn about a historical local plane crash as well as why children were evacuated to Belmont during the Second World War.
In line with the National Curriculum 2014, at Belmont, the purpose of our curriculum is to ensure that all pupils:
• Gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world which helps to stimulate pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
• Are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think analytically and critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement.
• Begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups as well as their own identity and challenges of their time.
