At Belmont Primary School, we believe that Art and Design is a vital and integral part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.  We have designed an Art and Design curriculum with the intent that it provides children with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society.

Our pupils will develop proficiency in drawing, understanding colour, sculpture and printing, with the overall aim of developing a critical awareness and inspiration of art and design. The art curriculum will develop children’s abilities and understanding of a wide range of famous artists and their work, whilst meeting their needs for self-expression, communication, and expose them to other artists across centuries and cultures.

Children will develop their understanding of the visual language of art with effective teaching and carefully planned sequences of lessons and experiences.  Understanding the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D forms) will be developed by providing an accessible and engaging curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. We hope that this introduction to the arts will develop their appreciation of art and last them a life time.
